With rising prices on heating fuel, staying warm in the winter can be a challenge. Stay ahead of the winter cold snaps by winterizing your home and servicing your appliances now.
Here are three actions that you can take to prepare your home for winter and help lower costs:
Sign up for free window inserts with Sustainable Woodstock
A third of a home’s heat loss can be through the windows, especially if they are older single-pane windows. Full window replacements can be costly, but there are some options to make this more affordable. The nonprofit WindowDressers helps Sustainable Woodstock build lightweight, reusable, interior storm-window inserts that can have a big impact on preventing heat loss through windows. The inserts are easy to install, removable, and reusable. They let light in, keep drafts out, and reduce heating costs. Sustainable Woodstock will measure windows over the summer and build inserts in the fall, so now is the time to sign up! Residents of Woodstock, Pomfret, Barnard, Bridgewater, Plymouth, Hartland, and Reading with income at or below moderate levels qualify for free inserts.

Sustainable Woodstock has grants of up to $3,000 to help pay for weatherization and sustainable home heating appliances such as heat pumps, heat pump water heaters, and pellet or wood stoves. Funding is available for income-qualifying (at the moderate-income level) residents of Woodstock, Pomfret, Barnard, Bridgewater, Brownsville, Weathersfield, Killington, Hartland, Plymouth, and Reading. These grants can be combined with Efficiency Vermont Rebates.

Apply for a grant from The HUB
Worried about whether your existing heating system will make it through the winter? The HUB offers grants that pay directly toward the services you need now. The HUB grants can cover:
- Boiler, furnace, or water heater tune-ups
- Chimney sweeping and safety inspections
- Oil or propane tank fills
- Electric bill costs
- Funding for sustainable heating appliance installation
When necessary, The HUB will connect you to additional resources, so you’re set up to maintain your system long term without the need for continued support.
