SUMMARY:Electric Lawn Care Demo
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that using a commercial gas-powered leaf blower for one hour produces as much smog-forming pollution as driving 1\,100 miles in a car?  Switching to electric lawn care equipment means less polution and less equipment maintenance. \n\n\n\nJoin us at the Market on the Green on July 22nd to give electric lawn care equipment a try. We’ll have electric mowers and edgers available to test so that you can see if they are right for you. \n\n\n\nArrive any time during the Market hours (3-6 PM). \n\n\n\nAlready have electric lawn care equipment?  We’d love to have more volunteers to join us in sharing their equipment for a demo.  Contact Heather Knoll\, Programs Coordinator at programs@sustainablewoodstock.org to volunteer.

SUMMARY:Film Screening: The Cost of Control
DESCRIPTION:The Cost of Control explores a dilemma facing a growing number of New England homeowners: How do we protect ourselves and our families from ticks without harming the other life that shares our backyards? This short film follows scientists from the Vermont Center for Ecostudies as they investigate residential tick-control practices across the Upper Valley\, revealing the surprising effects of pesticide spraying on pollinators\, other backyard insect wildlife\, and the ticks themselves. Blending scientific discovery with the perspectives of landowners and conservation experts\, our film asks us to think more deeply and holistically about how we interact with the ecosystems that surround us. Following the screening\, audience members are invited to stay for a Q&A with Vermont Center for Ecostudies ecologists Dr. Jason Hill and Amber Jones.

SUMMARY:Woodstock Repair Cafe
DESCRIPTION:A Repair Café is a free community event where neighbors bring in broken\, worn\, or beloved-but-well-used items and skilled volunteers help repair and restore them\, keeping still-usable items out of landfills. Think small appliances\, clothing repairs\, furniture fixes\, bicycle tune-ups\, sharpening\, soldering\, you name it. If it’s busted\, we’ll try to help you fix it. \n\n\n\nThis first Woodstock Repair Café is being organized by The Bunny Bin\, Sustainable Woodstock\, and Norman Williams Public Library. With your help\, we can empower people to make small fixes themselves\, save items that might otherwise end up in a landfill\, and build connections along the way. Join your friends and neighbors – there will be activities for the whole family! \n\n\n\nTo get involved\, share a skill or sponsor the event\, please email Programs@NormanWilliams.org or fill out this INTEREST FORM\, and we’ll follow up with details. \n\n\n\nVolunteer to fix things:\n\n\n\nWe invite local volunteers to launch Woodstock’s first-ever Repair Café\, and we’re looking for the fixers\, tinkerers\, menders\, and makers in our community to help bring it to life. \n\n\n\nBecause we live in both a trades desert and an aging community\, many of our neighbors have small repairs piling up at home. If you are a professional\, volunteer and bring your business cards\, show off what you know\, and make real connections with people who might need your skills now or down the road. \n\n\n\nWe’re looking for volunteers with skills in: \n\n\n\n\nSewing\, mending & alterations\n\n\n\nStain removal & fabric rescue\n\n\n\nCobbling & leather repair\n\n\n\nElectronics & small appliances\n\n\n\nComputer experts\n\n\n\nWoodworking\, furniture & creative repurposing\n\n\n\nBicycles\, clocks & other mechanical devices\n\n\n\nKnife & tool sharpening\n\n\n\nJewelry\n\n\n\nGeneral “I’ll figure it out” energy\n\n\n\n\nBring things to be fixed:\n\n\n\nOur goal is to help you mend small appliances\, clothing\, furniture\, you name it\, at no charge to you. \n\n\n\nA few guidelines: \n\n\n\n\nBring your own parts – plugs\, wires\, bolts\, buttons\, table legs\, etc.\n\n\n\nOne item per person per station.\n\n\n\nTo keep things manageable: if you can’t carry it\, please don’t bring it!\n\n\n\nOut of respect for our volunteers\, please be sure your item isn’t musty or excessively dirty.\n\n\n\n\nNo registration is needed; you can sign up for repairs at each station. We ask that you fill out this INTEREST FORM to help us plan. \n\n\n\nNote: By bringing an item\, you agree that Norman Williams Public Library\, The Bunny Bin\, Sustainable Woodstock\, and our volunteers assume no liability for injury\, damage\, loss\, or unsuccessful repair. All repairs are best-effort\, as-is.

SUMMARY:Window Dressers: Volunteer to Help Your Neighbors Stay Warm This Winter
DESCRIPTION:Sustainable Woodstock’s fifth annual Window Dressers Community Build is coming up November 5th -12th! \n\n\n\nDuring this week-long event\, volunteers come together to construct insulating window inserts for low- and moderate-income community members. These inserts act as interior storm windows\, reducing drafts and insulating homes. \n\n\n\nThere is a job for everyone at our Community Build. Some volunteers will bring lunch and snacks for others to eat\, some will greet and sign in volunteers as they enter\, and the rest of the volunteers will physically construct the inserts themselves. Absolutely no carpentry or building skills are necessary– we have taught steps in the process to children as young as 12 years old\, and to many adults without experience. \n\n\n\nWindow Dressers estimates that on average\, 10 inserts will save 105 gallons of heating fuel per year\, which at around $5.50/gallon\, amounts to more than $550 in savings per year. This means that our five builds combined will save over 10\,000 gallons of fuel for residents this winter. \n\n\n\nJoin us to meet new friends\, help your neighbors\, and help the environment.  We could not run this impactful program without those of you in our community who generously volunteer your time.  Thank you!
